Part 1: Basic Bead Class

Flameworking is a great way to learn to work with glass, with a quick learning curve!

Flameworking is a small-scale version of glassblowing. Students are seated at a bench with a small torch flame that’s used to melt rods of coloured glass. The work is intricate and detailed – perfect for creating glass jewelry or small sculptural items.
In this beginner’s entry-level class, sit with the Flo flameworking team and learn the many patterns that can be played with to form beautiful glass beads formed on the mandrel.

This fun introductory class will test your coordination and is sure to get you inspired. Students can expect to make at least 2-3 beads. Learn first-hand about molten glass while coming home with some pretty wonderful handmade art!

Part 2: Basic Bead Decoration

Part 2: Simple designs and patterns
In the second part of this series, get creative and learn more about standard bead designs and patterns. In this course, you will explore how to create swirls, air bubbles and we will go over simple encasing techniques.

Duration: 2.5 hours
Max 5 students/class
Prerequisite: Part 1
Minimum age: 15
Cost: $90.00 +HST

Colour Series

Glass artists spend years developing their particular colouring techniques. In this 15hr – 4-part Colour Series Workshop, you will learn a variety of ways to apply colour to your work. As well as the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Part 1: Powders and Frits

Part 2: The Pick-Up

Part 3: The Overlay

Part 4: Double Overlays

All materials, including colour, are included for this class. All forms made in this class are up to the student and are theirs to keep. Bowls or vases are commonly chosen, but that does not exclude alternative forms, provided it is not too advanced for the student.

Parts 5 & 6: Mastering The Vessel

Building from the foundation of the beginner classes 1-4, students in this 2 session course  will be given two sessions back to back in the hot shop to develop their skills and continue to grow their bubbled forms.

Part 5 focuses on that critical ‘punty’ step. The process of transferring a bubble from one pipe to another will allow you to work from its lip and open the piece to create smaller forms such as dishes and small vases.

Part 6 is the last class of the series and will focus on going BIGGER!

Upon completion of this course students have the opportunity to join the community and become a renter at Flo.

Part 1: Paperweight

In this hands-on beginners class, learn the fundamentals of glassblowing as you lead in making your own unique paperweight from start to finish.

Students will learn how to gather glass from the furnace, marver it across a steel tabletop, apply colour (chosen by you) and finally shape the piece at the bench with wooden blocks and traditional hand tools.  We polish the final product and you take it home the next day!

An amazing first experience for anyone who’s ever wanted to try glassblowing!

Part 2: Ornament

Building off the skills and techniques learned in Part 1: Paperweights, learn how to introduce air into solid pieces and work with hollow forms. New challenges include thinning out the glass walls and creating a narrow neck for it to break off. We put the hook on and you take it home the next day!

Part 3: Oil Lamp

This class introduces the tools and techniques used to shape and flatten the bottoms of standing vessels and to create an opening for a wick. You design, shape and blow the oil lamp and take it home with a wick for a completely unique functional piece!

Part 4: The Cup

This class uses all the techniques of the previous classes to create a beautiful drinking glass.  Watch and assist as you learn about the crucial ‘punty’.  After leading your piece into a long hollow form, you will flip it on its head and transfer it over to another pipe.  This technique will introduce you to new Jacking techniques where you will learn to open the lip of your cup into your perfect one of a kind tumbler glass, perfect for every day use.

Beer Steins

Fancy a pint? In this specialty class, students will blow and sculpt their very own glass beer stein with a handle.  Prerequisites: Part 1 and Part 2 of our beginners series.
